When it comes to love, animals feel just as much as humans do. The pictures below show the great love and affection these cute lions had for one another. Because the lion and the lioness were always inseparable, they were even euthanized together in order to make sure that neither one would have to live alone.
The couple’s names were Kalisa and Hubert. Kalisa was born in Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle and Hubert was born in Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. They met at the Los Angeles Zoo six years ago and became as one ever since. It seems that the love they shared became the reason why the couple exceeded the average lifespan of lions in captivity from 15 to 21 years. Due to this old age, the 21-year-old couple suffered from various health issues which impacted their quality of life enormously.
Being at the LA zoo for a long time, they became an inevitable part of the zookeepers’ daily routines. Alisa Behar, a zoo’s animal caretaker, said: “In the early mornings, staff would routinely hear Hubert’s waking roars, and I will personally miss hearing them on my walks around the grounds. You cannot think of Hubert without thinking of his companion, Kalisa; they’ve been an inseparable couple for years.”
In an interview to the Los Angeles Times, the LA zoo’s spokesperson, Beth Schaefer, said: “These lions were charismatic both together as partners and separately, but they were hardly ever apart from one another. Their undivided attention was always on the other as they rested together, cuddled and nuzzled often.”
In another statement, the zoo director and CEO, Denise Verret, said: “Hubert and Kalisa are an iconic part of the L.A. Zoo experience, and our staff and guests have been touched by their loyal companionship. These affectionate companions came to the L.A. Zoo six years ago, and they quickly charmed themselves into our hearts as we observed their magnificent beauty and unique bond. It was often said, you don’t see Kalisa without Hubert being close by. So, while it is truly heart-wrenching that we had to say goodbye to this iconic pair, we can take comfort in knowing they left together. These lions will remain a positive part of our history, and they will be greatly missed.”
During their time together, Kalisa and Hubert became parents of 10 cute little cubs.
